We talk about how colonial, imperialist, or exploitative practices and ideologies have marked the history of our field, whether by making it complicit in them or by colonizing it. There are a number of things about this episode that are disappointing. One might wonder, for instance, why George Floyd came up as a topic. Since ”returning stolen land” was mentioned, why did no one mention the Turkish theft of Asia Minor? But the real issue is this: I learned nothing about Byzantium from this episode. Only about the politics of the discussion panel. I

I know that ”decolonization” is currently a hot catch phrase in Academia, but am I the only one that remembers that the very concept of a colony began with the Romans? What happened in 1204 was unjust, but pails in comparison with what the Romans did to Carthage.
